The following is mainly for my own reference

most comprehensive
Whois Lookup, Whois History, Reverse Whois, DNS & IP Tools
Tell us what you know—we'll answer the important questions for you:
(I Know a Domain Name)
(I Know a Domain Owner)
(I Want to Buy a Domain)
Search Domain Ownership Records
Tell us a domain name and we'll tell you all about that domain's ownership. What's this?
Example: domaintools.com or www.domaintools.com or domain tools or 207.178.4.6
DomainTools makes it simple to find out who the owner of a specific domain name is. We'll tell you who owns a domain, their email address and physical address, their phone number, and a whole lot more!
This ownership search is FREE—just enter the domain name you want to know about and click the Search for Domain button.
And you can enter the domain name you're interested in without being too particular—here are examples illustrating the three different forms we'll accept:
- domaintools.com
- www.domaintools.com
- domain tools
Any of these forms will give you the exact same results.
AND, if all you have is an IP address, you can enter that, too! Searching for an IP address will give you ownership information for that specific IP address.
Search Domains by Owner
Tell us a person or company and we'll tell you everything we know. What's this?
Example: DomainTools, LLC, memberservices@domaintools.com, 2217 5th Avenue
DomainTools can find all the domain names currently or ever owned by anyone, whether they be a person or a company. Just tell us the owner's name, the email address or the physical address, and we'll return a list of the domain names they own or have owned under the information you provided.
The most accurate way to retrieve a full list that includes all names is to follow this process:
- Perform a Domain Ownership Records Search (Whois Search) for a domain name you that you are certain is owned by the person/company in question. (This search is available under the "I Know a Domain Name" tab.)
- Make note of the email address used in the ownership record (Whois record) for that domain.
- Return to the "I Know a Domain Owner" tab and use the email address from the ownership record of the known domain name as the search term in the ownership search,
- - OR -
- Navigate to the Reverse Whois tool and perform the search from that location using the email address from the ownership record of the known domain name as the search term.
Find A New Domain Name
Tell us the domain you want and we'll find it for you (and give you a few more tips). What's this?
Example: domaintools.com, domain tools, tools domains
If you want to purchase a domain name, we can tell you that name's availability and show you how to acquire it. And along the way, we'll just go ahead and give you a few ideas for domain names you may not have considered.
Start your search by entering the domain name you want in one of three acceptable forms:
- domaintools.com
- www.domaintools.com
- domain tools
Any of these forms will give you the exact same search results.
Results will consist of an availability check of the domain name you submit, methods of suggested purchase for both unregistered and registered domain names, an availability check on the same domain in other major extensions, and a variety of other related domain suggestions you may be interested in.
